Hormone Balancing

What causes a hormone imbalance?

There are many conditions that are caused by an imbalance in hormones and investigating the reasons behind this imbalance is a key part in creating successful treatment plans for my patients. Even very small changes in hormone levels can have a significant impact in how you feel and affect your chances of getting pregnant.

Underlying issues

When seeing patients I make sure to ask questions that could help determine if there could be any underlying hormonal issues:

  • “Are your periods regular?”

  • “Do you suffer from Pre-menstrual symptoms (PMS)?

  • “Do you have any mid-cycle spotting?”

  • “Do you often feel cold (especially your hands and feet), or hot?”

  • "Do you have trouble losing weight?”

  • “Do you have excessive hair on your face, chin or other parts of the body?”

  • “Do you have very painful cramping with your periods?”

  • “Have you gained a lot of weight recently without changing your eating habits?”

In addition to taking a thorough health history, I make sure to evaluate all blood work that has recently been done to look at hormone levels and other related factors. If no recent blood work has been done, I will refer my patients back to their family doctor or give them a requisition to have some blood work done.

Hormonal Disorders

Hormonal disorders can be a cause of infertility so uncovering what potential imbalances there are can help understand what fertility support is required.

Hormones and Men

Hormone levels in men should be investigated as this can affect fertility as well. Some important questions to ask are:

  • “Has there been a decrease in sex drive?”

  • “Have you noticed a loss of muscle mass?”

  • “Have you seen a decrease in body or facial hair growth?”
